JumpFromPaper Cartoon Bag X Wall paper artist Fabiola Lara

You probably have seen Fabiola’s work somewhere on the internet, on Instagram or Tumblr. Her cute artwork has been featured on The Cut, Cosmopolitan, and Femsplain. Her wallpaper art is inspired by pop culture, featured with some of our favorite artists, for example, Drake.

We hanged out with her in our Brooklyn apartment and teamed up with photographer Marie Tomanova and stylist Maria Montane, Patricia Cedeno to run an amazing editorial shoot.

  • Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m a freelance illustrator based in Brooklyn! My work primarily encompasses major pop culture icons such as Drake, Beyonce, and Kim Kardashian. I also love to create work that speaks directly to those who identify as women and are constantly fighting for gender equality.

  • What are you most drawn to?

On a day-to-day basis, I am obsessed with pop culture, celebs, and tabloid gossip, as well as commenting on outdated gender norms, sexuality, and feminism. Often times the celeb I’m keeping up with and the jokes I have running in my head blend together to serve as the basis for my work.

  • Favorite medium to work in?

My favorite medium outside of traditional pencil and paper is working digitally. Working digitally allows me to develop concepts and color palettes quickly while being flexible enough to make client revisions. As I’ve become more comfortable with digital tools, I’ve been able to play with the animated GIFs which give me an entirely different and innovative canvas to explore. Working digitally also allows me to easily transfer my designs and create merchandise ranging from shirts to ribbons to risograph prints.

  • Do you have a favorite book, film or artwork, which inspires you?

Harvey Pekar’s American Splendor comics are my favorite (including the accompanying film based on his life). His self-deprecating humor and mildly-depressing yet honest perspective serve as motivation since it reminds me to create for the sake of sharing my story not necessarily because it has to be elaborate or refined.

  • What is your favorite museum or art gallery and why?

Brooklyn Museum! I recently visited Stephen Power’s Coney Island Is Still Dreamland and was overwhelmed with inspiration. His mixture of sign painting, bold color palette, lettering, and iconography just gets my mind thinking in every direction all at once (in the best way).

  • What’s a future project you’re excited about?

I’m currently experimenting with newly animated illustrations! I’m also working on new patterns for my monthly downloadable wallpaper - tinyletter.com/casagirl.
